Owen's Mana Area
Location: Manor Common Room (Night)
Akira: According to the sage's journal, "Each wizard has their own sacred place that offers them spiritual energy."
"It's a place that allows a wizard to refresh their heart and focus their mind, a little like a charging station."
I'm told these are called "mana areas." Do you have a mana area, Owen?
Owen: I do, but I won't tell you what it is. I don't want anyone to break it.
Akira: I-I wouldn't do that... I won't force you to say anything, so don't feel obligated to tell me.
However, if there ever comes a time someone were trying to "break" your mana area... If I know what it is, I'd probably be able to protect it for you.
Owen: ......
I get it.
My mana area is an outdoor market,[1] though I won't tell you which or where that market is.
Akira: An outdoor market...? I feel like those are rather bustling, busy places... Are you sure you can really concentrate there?
Owen: I'm not answering any unnecessary questions.
Akira: Understood...
Owen: Should a war break out and there's a chance my mana area may be destroyed, I expect you'll be putting your life on the line to protect it for me, right, Master?
Owen's Amulet
Location: Owen's Room (Night)
Akira: According to the sage's journal, "A wizard who spends a long time away from their respective mana area carries an amulet that serves as a substitute mana area."
"By carrying an amulet, a wizard can reap the benefits of being in a mana area, without physically being in the mana area itself."
Owen, do you have an amulet?
Owen: I do. What's yours? I wanna know what kinda face you'd make if I broke it right in front of you.
Akira: I still don't know mine...
Owen: Ugh. Boring.
......
After thinking for awhile, Owen pulls open his desk drawer. The inside brims with dozens and dozens of chess pieces.
When I look closely, I can tell they don't all seem to match. Did chess sets normally have so many pieces? I get the sense that he probably took pieces from a number of different sets.
Owen: Apparently, my amulet is chess pieces. They give me more energy when I put them in a pile like this.
Akira: Just the pieces? You don't have a board?
Owen: It's not like I can actually play. I'm always alone.
Akira: Do you like horses? I can't help but notice that most of these pieces are horse-shaped[2]...
Owen: ... Shut it. I'm done now.
Akira: Uwah!
As I was reaching for one of the pieces, the sound of Owen slamming the desk drawer shut resounded— my fingers just a hair's breadth away from getting caught in it.
A Walk with Cerberus
Location: Forest, near river (Day)
(Sound of Cerberus growling)
Akira: Owen, Owen!
Owen: Well, if it isn't the sage. What brings you here?
Akira: Please don't "what brings you here" me! Why is Cerberus loose in the forest? I thought it was going to kill me...
Owen: I'm just taking him out on a walk. I always keep him locked up in my trunk, so sometimes I let him out.[3]
Akira: You make it sound like it's a pet when you call this a "walk"...
Owen: Are you sure you should be with me? He's the sort of puppy to try and kill me on sight, so it's pretty dangerous to be standing next to me.
(Sound of Cerberus growling)
Owen: Haha. Wow, he's so angry. How adorable.
Akira: That's so... Can't you try and be a little friendlier with Cerberus?
Option One: You should give it a treat!Owen: There's no need for me to get along with him. It's enough to keep him shut up in my trunk.
Owen: And where would I get something like that? Could you be, perhaps, offering up yourself? How very commendable of you, Master.
Akira: That's not what I meant when I said—...! Ah— Please don't push me closer; I don't want to be its meal.
Option Two: You should give it a toy!
Owen: Are you making fun of me? Don't mix him up with your average dog or cat.
Akira: I apologize. It was just my gut instinct...
Though, he'll probably continue to resent me for it.
Owen's Family
Location: Manor Hallway (Afternoon)
Akira: Owen, do you remember anything about your family?
Owen: Does Mithra?
Akira: Huh?
Owen: Did you ask Mithra this, too? Mithra... What did he say?
Akira: Umm, I believe he said he didn't really remember them...
Owen: Hmmm. Then, I don't really remember mine either.
Akira: ... "Then"...? If you don't want to tell me, I don't mind it you just say tha...
Owen: I don't remember, okay? If Mithra doesn't remember either, then it's not weird if I don't either, right?
Akira: ... I understand.
Owen: ... Hmph. (Leaves)
Akira: (What an odd way of putting it. If he just didn't want to be reminded of his family, he would've phrased it differently...)[4]
(I think it'd be a good idea if I were a little more delicate when asking Owen to tell me about his past.)
Owen's Perspective on Cain
Location: Manor Courtyard (Afternoon)
Akira: Owen, you took one of Cain's eyes and you're always picking fights with him... Are you interested in him?
Owen: Not at all.
Akira: Really?
Owen: Of course. He doesn't matter to me in the slightest. I'm only picking on him to kill some time.
Akira: But... You took out your own eye and put Cain's in instead, so I figured you were at least interested in his eye.
Owen: No chance. I absolutely hate it. It's a mix between the color of honey and the glow of dawn's first light; the color of summer flowers. There's no color I hate more.
Akira: (Or so he says, but he seems to be in high spirits talking about it.)
Owen: I hate how this color resembles the color of a canary's wings, and the color of citrus peels bathed in daylight.
Akira: (So Owen says the opposite of what he thinks, huh. I'm guessing what he means is that he likes it. Ah... I just had a good idea.)
Then, what do you hate about Cain?
Owen: Too many things to count. Like how he was a knight who protects humans even though he's a wizard. How he takes such good care of his stupid, useless sword.
How he laughs. His loud voice. His red hair. How he comes up to me all normally to talk even though I'm the one who took his eye.
And how...
What. What are you smiling for?
Akira: Oh, no reason.
Owen: Do you want to hear more?
Akira: Yes, I certainly do.
Owen and Mithra
Location: Manor Garden (Night)
Akira: What kind of relationship did you have with Mithra when you were in the North, Owen?
Owen: None whatsoever. He's dangerous, so I tried not to get too involved with him.
Akira: What do you mean when you say "dangerous"...?
Owen: Mithra's movements are unpredictable. Nothing you say gets through to him, and he's hard to corner and manipulate through words.
Akira: That's very true.
Owen: Mm. Though, sometimes I succeed in getting at him.
Option One: How did you manage it?Akira: That's very true... But nowadays you've gotten pretty friendly with Mithra, right?
Owen: For someone like Mithra, you can force his movements better when you sweet-talk him than when you verbally corner him. You have to beg and wheedle and plead with him as earnestly as you can manage.
But, while that's certainly a method you can use with him, sucking up to him makes me sick, and his moods change too suddenly, so I stopped doing that.
Option Two: Do you know anyone else like that?
Owen: ... Cain, I guess. He never wanes like I expect him to, and I can't get anything I say to get through to him.
"I'll accept punishment when I'm wrong, but even if that happens, I'll still press onward toward the best possible future"... All those parts of him... They're so swelteringly bright, I can't stand it.
Owen: Not even in the slightest.
Mithra: (Appears) Oh, if it isn't Owen. Would you like to have some tea with me? I can't sleep, so I need something to distract me.
Akira: Look, he wants to spend time with you.
Owen: (Muttering) There's absolutely no way I can get close to an insomniac Mithra who's looking for a distraction... I can't gauge just when he'll strike, and...
Mithra: Owen.
Owen: I just remembered I have something to do! See you.
Owen's Favorite
Location: Manor Common Room (Night)
Akira: What kind of relationship did you have with Bradley when you were in the North, Owen?
Owen: We were good friends. Bradley hated me, though.
Akira: Is that so?
Owen: It's because Bradley had a ton of underlings. Bradley himself may be decently strong, but that doesn't mean his underlings were.
Sometimes, you're weaker in a group than you would be alone.
When his underlings let me whisper into their ears, they began to doubt him; they began to fear him; they began to betray him; they began to lust for the position of leader for themselves.
So Bradley hates my guts. Fufu. Even though I just want to be even better friends with him.
Akira: (Owen sure seems happy...)
Bradley doesn't have any underlings now, does he? What do you think of the current Bradley, who's alone?
Option One: Does he seem strong to you?Akira: That's very true... I feel like, if you didn't say such cruel things to Bradley, you two could really get along.
Owen: Who knows. His magical power has never been a match for mine, but...
He's oddly clever, so I really hate the fact that he might be able to scheme a way to stand a chance against me now that he doesn't have anyone to protect or command.
Option Two: Does he seem weak to you?
Owen: He is weak. He's not weak because he's alone. He's weak because he still worries about other people, even though he's all alone.
Bradley has very human qualities— he runs himself into the ground for the people he loves, because he just can't abandon anyone close to him.
Owen: I don't say anything cruel to him. I just happen to love the expression he makes when his face scrunches up in disgust.
Ah— Well, look who's decided to join us.
Bradley: Yikes, Owen's here... Turning back around.
Owen: Bradley, wait. Won't you talk with me awhile? Hey, heyyy, listen to me.
Akira: (He happily went chasing after Bradley... Guess Bradley still has it pretty hard with him.)
Owen and Japanese Sweets
Location: Manor Dining Room (Day)
Akira: By the way, do you know anything about wagashi?
Owen: War? Gashes?[5]
Akira: No, it's nothing so disturbing... Wagashi are traditional Japanese sweets— a type of confection from the world I came from. They're made without cream or wheat-based flour.
Things like dango or youkan are wagashi. I think most of them were rather sweet and super squishy.
Owen: Super squishy.
Akira: Speaking of, I do recall seeing some containers labeled "No Way This isn't Soy Flour" and "Probably Adzuki Paste" in the kitchen. I think I can at least make ohagi with that...![6]
Owen: ......
Akira: Ah, I'm sorry. I was getting carried away on my own.
Owen: I don't mind. I also want to eat... the super squishy.
Akira: Huh? Do you mean the ohagi?
Owen: Yes, the old haggy.
Akira: It's not "old haggy," but... Understood! I'll do my very best to make it!
Owen: Get a move on already. If you're not quick, I'll turn you into an old hag.[7]
Cat Interpreter
Location: Manor Courtyard (Day)
Akira: Ah, a cat...! Did you get lost and end up here?
Cat: Meow~
Akira: I see, I see... You're hungry, huh.
Owen: Nope. He's talking about the sheets.
Akira: Ah! Owen.
Owen: He's just saying, "The sheets you hung up to dry are falling." He doesn't feel all that hungry right now.
Akira: So that was it...! Thank you very much for letting me know, Owen. Your ability really is incredible.
And thank you, too, kitty~ There, there, I'm going to pet you plenty as thanks.
Cat: Meow~
Akira: Ah! Just now, he said, "You're welcome!" Perhaps I've also come to understand how cats feel, just a little...!
Owen: ......
You're a hundred years too young to even get close to beating me.
Owen's Special Skill
Akira: (Oh, that's Owen over there. Looks like a lot of little birds have gathered all around him...)
Owen: Well, if it isn't the sage.
Akira: Owen, are you feeding the birds?
Owen: Me? It's true they're eating, but it's not like I'm feeding them or anything.
I'm listening to them talk. Birds love to gossip.
They're talking all about how the wizards in the manor hate the new sage. Do you want to know all the details?
Akira: ... That's enough. I won't be fooled by your words, because I have full faith in everyone here.
Owen: Boring.
Akira: So, Owen, you can talk to birds and other animals. Can all wizards do that?
Owen: Who knows. Pretty sure it's impossible for other people.
Akira: I see... I'm a little jealous of the fact that you can communicate with animals.
Owen: Animals, they're boring and simplistic— they never speak ill of anyone.
Bird: Chirp chirp chirp...
Akira: (Still, I get the feeling that animals grow fond of Owen very easily... Maybe they think of him as one of them because he can talk to them?)
Owen the Bully
Location: Akira's room (Night)
Akira: (Nnh? Why do I feel so hot...?)
(Fire burning)
Akira: My room is on fire!?
Owen: Hey, Master Sage.
Akira: Owen! Please, help me, a fire just broke out...!
Owen: Ahhh... What a wonderful expression. Let that fear consume you. This fire is going to swallow up everything, you know? You're going to die.
Akira: Please, help me! I don't want to burn to ashes!
Owen: ... You can beg better than that. What are you going to give me in return for going out of my way to help you out in your hour of absolute terror?
Akira: I'll, I'll tell you all about the candy store I found in a Central city the other day! It's super delicious! In fact, I'll treat you!
Owen: ... Well, good enough.
≪Quare Morito≫
(Fire fades)
There, all done. Did you enjoy the illusion I made? Did you have fun? You made the funniest face I've ever seen, Master.
Akira: ......
Owen: Haha, that really was a good way to kill some time. Don't forget what you owe me, all right?
Owen's Crest
Akira: I've heard that for those chosen to be the sage's wizards, a crest manifests somewhere on their bodies, marking them as belonging to that particular sage.
Where is your crest, Owen?
Owen: Maybe you'll understand if you let me take a big bite out of your head and let me work my way down.
Akira: Trying to spook me again, huh...
Huh? ... Please wait a moment. Are you saying that, in your mouth is...
Owen: Ding ding ding.
While Owen was grinning wide, lips parted, I saw his tongue. I could see a black crest distinctly engraved there.
Akira: So crests really can appear anywhere... I'm sure that must have been surprising.
Owen: I wouldn't say I was surprisedー more like irate. Some symbol I had no say in whatsoever suddenly imprinted itself to my tongue all out of nowhere.
I really wanted it out, so I tried whatever I could. I even died after ripping my tongue out once.
Akira: That's... a pretty intense dislike, I see...
So, it sounds like you didn't know anything about the crest or the sage when it appeared.
Owen: I was always alone, and I wasn't really interested in the calamities, so, no, not really.
I thought those infamous twins might know something about the crest, so I went to see them, but... the welcome party they threw really ticked me off.
I've been fighting the calamities since then, but, honestly, I'm starting to get sick of it. I've had enough, so I'd like if I could be released from these duties.
Owen's Singing Voice
Location: Manor Courtyard (Day)
Akira: What is this sound... A song?
Owen: ~♪
Akira: Huh!? Owen's singing...
(He's surrounded by songbirds... This looks like a scene right out of a movie.)
Owen: ... Are you trying to hide? You're in full view, Master.
Akira: I'm sorry; I didn't mean to eavesdrop.
Owen, you're so good at singing. Do you enjoy it?
Owen: I haven't thought about whether I like it or not, but it draws animals to me. They all love music.
Just like this, look.
~~♪
Akira: Wah! Even more showed up.
Owen: Haha. You were lured in by my singing too, so you're like a beast yourself.
I Want You to Feel Scared
Location: Owen's room (Night)
Akira: Owen! There's been this strange sound coming from your room— are you all right?
Owen: Oh, Master. I figured Oz should be going to sleep right about now, and he's in the room next to mine, so I'm dragging my nails across the window to harass him.
Akira: P-Please be kind to him and just go to bed quietly...
Option One: What do you do when you're alone?Owen: You have good ears, Master.
Owen: I do the things I like. Life here is especially enjoyable.
Do you enjoy yourself when you're alone? Are you having fun? Do you actually mean to be alone? Aren't you just alone because everyone hates you, so no one's invited you along?
Option Two: Do you ever invite others into your room?
Owen: I never invite anyone. I hate it when people come into my room.
Akira: I-I'm sorry, I just burst in... But I was worried, so...
Option Three: What's your daily routine?
Owen: I don't have one. I do what I want, when I want.
Though, it irritates me how snack time in the dining room is effectively decided on a whim. And if I try to steal a snack when it's not time, Figaro shows up...
Akira: I woke up and went out into the hallway, and I was pretty surprised I heard such a strange sound despite it being the dead of night.
Owen: Allow me to tell you a bedtime story to help you back to sleep. How about the story of a headless knight? Or, would you prefer the story of a devil you can summon within a mirror?[8]
Akira: No, thank you. Everyone is asleep, so take care not to make so much noise. Good night, Owen.
Owen: I know— Why don't I tell you about the Lake of Death in the North? There lies a small island with only a graveyard stretched along the whole of its expanse, where a child's boat carries the bodies of the dead to...[9]
Akira: Please don't follow me while murmuring a scary story...!!
Disappointment
Location: Manor Common Room (Day)
Akira: Owen isn't moving, and he's all stiff... but his eyes are wide open.
Cain: ... I doubt he's sleeping. Someone probably killed him.
Akira: Huh!? Why would anyone...
Cain: He may have been unpleasant, but I don't feel great about this, either.
Just you wait, Owen. I'll find the culprit without fail...!
Owen: Ku... Aha, a~hahaha!
Cain: Whoa, Owen...!
Owen: Ahh, that was hilarious. Watching the sage and knight peering at me with the most ridiculous looks on their faces... That really was the best.
Akira: I nearly had a heart attack... Were you pretending to be dead just now!?
Owen: Hmmm. Who knows?
Cain: ... I can see just how poor your complexion is. Someone did kill you, didn't they? Are you really all right, Owen?
Owen: ... Shut it. Ahh... I'm so bored.
Anger and Joy
Location: Manor Dining Room (Day)
Akira: Good morning, Owen.
Owen: .......
Akira: (He seems beyond cranky today...)
W-What a lovely morning! Do you mind if I sit across from you?
Owen: Sit where you want. You won't get any sympathy from me if my long legs hit you, though.
Akira: You're hitting my legs especially hard today. Did something happen...?
Owen: Not really. Snow and White just forced me to wake up. Even though the chirping of songbirds always used to awaken me in the mornings when I was in the North. Waking up here is so annoying and noisy— it's the worst.[10]
Akira: If you'd like, should I come to wake you up in the mornings? —Ah, ow! Please don't kick me.
Nero: Mornin'. Today's breakfast is pancakes. Add as much syrup as you'd like.
Owen: Pancakes! Yay.
Akira: (He really is the poster child for mood swings...)
Owen's Prank
Location: Kitchen (Night)
Akira: Phew. Today went by without incident. I'll get some water and go to sleep.
(Screen goes black)
Akira: (!? T-The lights suddenly went out...)
???: Fou~nd you.
Akira: Eek...!!!
(Lights return)
Owen: Hey, Master. Nice night, isn't it?
Akira: Owen! Jeez, please don't scare me like that. I nearly had a heart attack...
Owen: How cruel of you, Master. You decided I was the one pranking you just because you can't see anyone else here?
Akira: Huh? Then it wasn't you?
Owen: Do I have to spell it out for you?
Akira: You showed up right when it happened... I apologize for doubting you.
Owen: It's all right. Because I just lied.
Akira: Huh.
Owen: Ahaha. You're so easy to deceive, Master. You really are hilarious.
Excels in: Making People Mad
Location: Manor Hallway (Night)
Bradley: Hey! Owen!! You better crawl outta wherever the hell you're hiding and get your ass out here!!
Mithra: Master, have you seen Owen, by any chance?
Akira: I haven't seen him at all today, no... Is everything all right? The two of you have the scariest looks on your faces...
Bradley: Tch! I'll look around here. Mithra, you take the other side!
Mithra: Please don't order me around. I'll crush you.
(Sound of them running off)
Akira: They're gone... Just what in the world happened...?
Owen: Master.
Akira: Uwah, Owen! Please don't appear out of thin air without warning. Everyone's looking for you.
Owen: I know. Even though all I did was snatch Bradley's candy, among other things, and oh-so-kindly comforted Mithra after he'd lost to Oz.
Akira: So you did this to yourself, huh... Owen, let's find the two of them together. You should apologize.
Owen: No way. What are you gonna do if I die?
Snow and White: Owen, there you are! We absolutely won't forgive you this time!!
Akira: You've even angered Snow and White...!
Translation Notes
1. The word Owen uses is "shijou," which I've translated as "outdoor market" depending on the context (this is the in-game name of the background/location in Owen's initial SSR story, for instance). However, it's worth noting is that a shijou can be indoors or outdoors so long as it's in an enclosed space (if you search 市場, you'll see what I mean), and, without knowing what Owen's mana area looks like, it's hard to say if it's actually outdoors or not. Japanese fans seem to interpret this word to mean an outdoor market, perhaps based on the aforementioned in-game background label, so I went with their understanding of the word's connotation and translated it as such. An alternate translation I've considered for Owen's mana spot is "bazaar," which are like shijous in that they can be indoors or outdoors so long as they're in an enclosed space, but the game references bazaars as バザール (bazaaru) specifically, so this may not apply to Owen's mana area.↑
2. The horse piece in chess is the knight piece.↑
3. Owen describes locking up Cerberus with the verb 閉じ込める (tojikomeru), and uses the phrase 外に出す (soto ni dasu) to describe letting him out. This runs parallel to how the humans in this flashback describe Owen being locked up using the same verb (tojikomeru), and parallel to how Owen asks if they'll really going to let him out (soto ni dasu). Owen also uses tojikomeru with noticeable frequency, such as in his birthday stories and the Brave Pioneer event, to describe being locked up in a small and confined spaces. This verb becomes a focal point for Owen's character in the first anniversary story, as well. ↑
4. See Owen's affection story. ↑
5. The original wordplay couldn't be preserved in English, but it was basically:
Akira: Owen, do you know about Japanese(wa) sweets(gashi)?
Owen: About(wa) starving to death(gashi)?
So he may have mistook Akira's question as Akira asking if Owen knows what it's like to starve to death. Which may just be a coincidence, but could also be a reference to his past... ↑
6. How the previous sage labeled kitchen ingredients. ↑
7. Owen (intentionally?) misspeaks the word "ohagi" as お追い剥ぎ, oihagi (roadside robbery). In the last line of the story in the Japanese, he makes a pun out of his error (or "error") by saying, "If you're not quick, I'll roadside rob you." ↑
8. Probably meant to evoke the tales of the headless horseman and Bloody Mary respectively. Trivia: the Headless Horseman is known as the Headless Knight in Japanese.↑
9. See Mithra's location story. ↑
10. Snow and White have a pretty loud way of waking Owen up. ↑
